Interstate Resources Energy Division is committed to reducing our group’s dependency on fossil fuels by investing in solutions that produce steam and electricity using alternative and renewable fuels that meet a significant part of our energy needs.
Biomass
Burning biomass or wood waste meets a significant part of our energy demand. These renewable energy sources come from both forests managed for sustainable use and wood waste which would be destined to landfills.
By producing energy in our paper mills, we decrease demand for natural resources, lower costs and remain competitive in the marketplace. In using biomass fuel, we help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, providing an additional benefit to our energy production.
Using biomass is carbon neutral, as carbon in emissions is sequestered back into cellulosic products, which are harvested and eventually converted into energy. As a result, biomass reduces our costs, our dependency on foreign fuel, and our carbon footprint.
In Pennsylvania, our energy-efficient boiler and steam generator at Evergreen Community Power (ECP) is fuelled with biomass materials and wood waste to generate 30 MW of power. This energy can be used at our paper mill, United Corrstack, and the excess exported for sale to the regional electrical transmission grid. In Georgia, our biomass boiler at Interstate Paper produces 8 MW of power.
In addition to power generation, this green operation has created new jobs in Berks County, PA and Riceboro, GA.
